Turning Half-Baked Ideas Into Recipes For Success

Author: Direshnee Naiker

I’ve always believed the kitchen is the heart of the home, a place where the magic of meals and memories are created.

It’s where the aroma of freshly baked bread fills the air, where laughter and conversation flow as easily as the pour of a glass of wine. It’s the place where our children learn to cook and where families bond over a shared love of food. But it’s not just about the food; the kitchen is also where great ideas are born.

A kitchen is a place of creativity, where the mixing of ingredients can lead to something new and delicious. My own kitchen has always been a place where I go when I’m looking for inspiration. Because you never know what delicious ideas may simmer to the surface.

Marketing is similar to the magic of a kitchen. It’s a combination of ideas, creativity, imagination, invention, and, in some circumstances, blind faith that everything will work out, even if you veer from the original recipe for success.

Growing up in Durban with my hardworking parents, I learned the value of dedication and determination at a young age. My dad, a sole breadwinner raising three children, worked tirelessly to provide the basics needed for us to get an education, often working night shifts until midnight and then fetching me from university at 12:30 am to enable me to study. This experience deeply influenced me, instilling in me a strong work ethic and a determination to succeed. When I decided to start my own company, I knew that I wanted to build something that reflected the values that I had learned growing up.

I founded Decision Kitchen in November 2022 with a burning desire to make a difference in the world as an independent female. I had spent years honing my skills, building my competencies, and making valuable connections in the market. I knew that I had what it takes to be a successful business owner, the ability create something special and am determined to make it happen.

I had a clear mindset of what type of CEO I wanted to be: someone who doesn’t make excuses but makes time, who is always learning, who supports themselves, who takes the time to rest but who never quits. I believe that success doesn’t happen by chance. It happens by change. It’s the result of hard work and a relentless pursuit of excellence. I knew that starting my business would be a challenge, but I was up for it. I was ready to face any obstacle that came my way and to come out on top.

But Decision Kitchen is not just about me. It’s about the impact the business can make. It’s a force for good. It’s a platform for empowering others to make better decisions, achieve their goals, and live their best lives.

Naming my company after my two children (D and K) was a powerful and personal decision. It represents the love, hope, and inspiration my children bring into my life. They are my constant motivation to strive for excellence, to be a role model, and to work hard to build a legacy for them. It also symbolises my company is built on family values and that my children are at the heart of all my decisions and actions. It’s a reminder that all that I do is for them and that they are the ones that I want to make proud.

Like all businesses, starting my own company was challenging. One of the biggest tests I faced as start-up was getting people to understand and respect the concept of time. I tackled this by emphasising time is money and one of the most valuable assets you can afford anyone. I intend on developing a full-service agency with in-house designers and the importation of essential products for my clientele.

One of the biggest epiphanies in my life was losing when I had to let go of my CEO who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Not only was he a loss in the motor industry but also the loss of my mentor, guide, inspiration and confidant. He gave his heart, body, mind and soul to his career only to be taken away in a heart-beat. He serves as a constant reminder of work life balance and his greatest teaching of the importance of being patient and believing in people before they have proven themselves, as this is key to motivating people to reach their potential.

My favourite Rumi quote is: “Silence is an ocean. Speech is a river. When the ocean is searching for you, don’t walk into the river. Listen to the ocean.”

This quote speaks to the power and importance of silence. It reminds us that sometimes in life, the most important thing we can do is to stop and listen. The ocean represents the vast, deep, and powerful inner wisdom that resides within us all. It’s only when we are quiet and still that we can hear the whispers of our own inner guidance.

Outside of work, I am blessed to have my amazing parents who have supported me every step of the way, been married for 20 wonderful years to a loving husband who runs his own successful business. Together, we have two beautiful children, a 19-year-old son at university and a 16-year-old daughter in grade 11.

When I’m not working or spending time with my family, I enjoy yoga and pilates and appreciate the time and opportunity both these disciplines give me to clear my mind, let go of the noise of the world, and connect with my inner self. By taking time for myself and for my well-being, I am able to approach life with renewed energy, focus, and creativity.

My hope has always been to own a business that serves as an inspiration for others to pursue their dreams, take risks, think big, and make a change. I believe that together, we can change the world, one decision at a time.
