My daughter taught me something beautiful…

Every time we pull up to a pay parking booth, she rolls down the window, smiles and says to the attendant, “Hello! How are you?” The reaction she gets is almost always the same. A smile from ear to ear. It makes me wonder how many people drive through every day without ever acknowledging the person sitting in that booth.

She reminds me that every person wants to feel seen. She does the same wherever we go. We’ll be sitting in a restaurant and she’ll quietly whisper “Mommy, that waitress is so beautiful.” Or “I love that lady’s hair.” “Her smile is so pretty.” “Those shoes are amazing.” It doesn’t matter who the woman is. A waitress. A teacher. A stranger in a shopping centre. Someone walking past us. She notices beauty everywhere.

For a long time I’d say, “If you think something beautiful about someone… tell them.” At first, she was shy. But little by little, she’s finding the courage. And every time she does, the person’s face lights up. Sometimes they’re surprised. Sometimes they blush. Sometimes they simply smile and say, “Thank you.” And every single time, they walk away just a little lighter.

Watching her has made me realise something. We don’t only celebrate people with grand gestures. Sometimes we celebrate them with a simple “hello.” A genuine compliment. A smile. A few kind words.

Don’t wait to tell someone what you admire about them. Don’t keep the compliment to yourself. Don’t assume they already know. You never know what battle someone is quietly fighting. You never know if your few words will be the only kindness they receive that day.

So today…Say hello to the person in the parking booth. Thank the waitress. Compliment the stranger with the beautiful smile. Tell your friend how much they mean to you. Remember, another woman’s beauty doesn’t diminish yours. Another person’s success doesn’t take away from your own. There is room for all of us to shine. Today, let’s choose encouragement over comparison, kindness over criticism, celebration over competition. Let’s become people who notice the good in each other…and have the courage to say it out loud. Because long after people have forgotten our conversations, they’ll remember how we made them feel.

Celebrate people while they’re here. Because the greatest gift we can give one another isn’t always something we can wrap. Sometimes it’s simply making someone feel seen.
