Making a positive impact

My name is Monique Weyers and I am a finalist in the prestigious Mrs. Universe South Africa 2023/24 competition.

I am a ‘ray of sunshine’, as described by my loving husband. Born in Kwazulu-Natal and currently residing in Pretoria, Gauteng, I work in the aviation industry for a private charter company and I hold a Student Pilot license whilst working towards my Private Pilot license.

As a woman in the traditionally male-dominated aviation industry, I am determined to use my platform to pave the way for women and young girls. My personal journey is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and self-belief. I hope to inspire others, showing them that it is never too late to pursue their dreams.

I faced bullying and struggled with body image during my teenage years, leading to an eating disorder. This took a toll on my emotional and physical well-being, causing me to doubt myself and I fell into depression. With the support of my parents and professional help, I realized that only I could make the decision to help myself.

At the age of 23, I experienced the heartbreaking loss of my father to cancer. Seeking solace and guidance, I moved to Cape Town and found strength in my faith. It helped me see the bigger picture and made me understand that we all have a purpose in life.

Despite experiencing a miscarriage in 2021, I accepted it as a part of my life’s journey. I believe that my motherly love can be directed towards children who lack a nurturing figure in their lives. Through my initiative called #bornwithpurpose, I support babies and children born in difficult circumstances, aiming to provide them with essential necessities. More importantly, my impact extends beyond material support, spreading love and kindness. My message to the world is clear, love, attention and affection are priceless gifts that can transform lives.

I am also passionate about being a voice for survivors of genderbased violence (GBV) and rape. It is crucial to spread awareness that no one has the right to touch or harm another person inappropriately. Society must address the issue of inappropriate behaviour and respect personal boundaries.

My story is one of resilience, determination, and a deep desire to make a positive impact in the world. My journey serves as an inspiration to all those who face adversity and doubt in their lives. By uniting in support and empathy, we can create a future filled with love and purpose for all.
