Are our children really okay?
Lately, I’ve been hearing about more and more young people taking their own lives, and it breaks my heart!
Our children are growing up in a world unlike anything previous generations experienced. They face social media, constant comparison, cyberbullying, unrealistic expectations, academic pressure, and the challenge of trying to figure out who they are while the world watches. At the same time, parents are trying to raise resilient, kind, and confident children in a world that changes faster than any parenting manual can keep up with.
Maybe the question isn’t whether we’re doing enough. Maybe it’s whether we’re creating spaces where our children feel safe enough to say, “I’m not okay.” That starts at home, but it doesn’t end there. It extends to our schools, our families, our communities, and to every adult who has the opportunity to listen without judgment.
And while we worry about our children, let’s not forget the adults. Many are carrying silent struggles too. Some have never learned how to ask for help, while others simply don’t know where to turn. No one, child or adult, should ever feel that they have to face life’s darkest moments alone.
Perhaps the greatest gift we can give our children, and one another, is the confidence to say, “I’m not okay,” and the assurance that someone will respond with love instead of judgment. Let’s teach our children that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. Let’s check in with our friends, our family, and our neighbours. And let’s remember that sometimes the strongest-looking people are carrying the heaviest burdens.
One conversation. One moment of kindness. One person who truly listens. Sometimes, that can make all the difference.
If you’re struggling or you’re worried about someone else, please reach out to someone you trust. Asking for help is a sign of strength, and no one should have to face difficult times alone ❤️
